As we all have 4G now, 5G is the next 5th generation of wireless network technology. Now, all big carriers are working on their 5G networks right now for making 5G ready phones. i.e., Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, etc. The main theme of 5G is speed.

As every new generation of wireless networks is significantly faster and more capable than the previous. Maybe you remember some of the old and very slow 2G and 3G and how much better 4G is than those, 5G represents another step forward. So to take advantage of 5G, you need a 5G device. with 5G radios and 5G network like the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G.

Biggest Flaw of 5G Technology Ready Phones

5G is built on millimeter waves. It’s a new section of a very high-frequency spectrum upwards of 20 gigahertz all the way to near 96 gigahertz. But the touch is, the higher the frequency of any wave, the lesser the range. So for the same reason, 5 gigahertz Wi-Fi doesn’t travel as far as 2.4 gigahertz Wi-Fi. So, what’s the solution for this? Basically just putting a lot of nodes all over the place. Thus, essentially to maximize coverage and improve technologies. So that when you move behind one obstacle or sort of drive through the city, you actually switch between nodes that you’re connected to.

It might scare people, as it seems like a brute force way to actually go fixing the problem but that’s the current plan for using 5G-ready phones. It’s just blanket areas with these lower-powered cells that let you switch between them very quickly instead of one giant 4G tower as you have now. It would be the infrastructure where you cover an entire city and eventually an entire country in these little nodes is going to be incredibly expensive. It would probably take a very long time like years so it’s a long way off.

Other Drawbacks of 5G ready Phones

Even you are standing right next to a 5G node and holding a brand new 2021 5G ready phone, there will still some drawbacks to notice on your phone. The main three are

  2. Battery
  3. Upload

Therefore, for one the upload appears to be still happening at 4G speed. If your dream is to upload 8k videos on any social media platform in 5 seconds, or going live streaming, high-resolution VR, or something like that, is not possible at all yet. Heat and battery are something that Samsung 5G ready phones seemed to specifically suffer when you use them.

For example., if your phone battery percentage is 75 and you use it for 4 to 5 consecutive hours using 5G network. Its battery would drop down to 21% or maybe less even if you are not doing gaming or anything graphically intensive. Also, the phone would be warm to touch the whole time. That’s why 5G versions of phones coming out almost always have a larger battery than their normal 4G brothers, including the Galaxy S10 5G.

Consequently, the bottom line is, 5G ready phones would be like folding phones right now in 2021 clearly not ready yet. But when you start to use it, you will get the amazing little glimpse into the future that you wish was ready for right now, because it’s so great. But it’s not and currently the cons sort of outweighing the pros. And you wouldn’t spend extra money in 2021 for just more cons of 5G ready phones.
